Trees for Biodiversity

The presence of Osmoderma eremita, a species with "priority" protection included in the Habitat Directive, in the old oaks of Viale dei Roveri made it necessary to protect these centuries-old trees. However, the advanced state of senescence of some specimens of English oaks no longer guaranteed an acceptable level of safety to allow the passage of the public along the majestic Avenue. The Conservation Measures drawn up by the European Community require the maintenance and conservation of large-sized trees housing the xylophagous beetles, that is, those that feed on wood (hermit beetle, oak beetle, kite), in order to guarantee perpetuation over time suitable habitats for completing the biological cycle of these insects.

In view of the need to reconcile public safety with the community obligations to protect biodiversity, the Park Authority has chosen to remove and move some of the old trees into a safer place.
Having the adult insects an extremely reduced mobility (their range of displacement does not exceed a few hundred meters) and therefore having to guarantee an ecological corridor between the new site and the original avenue, the arboreal specimens were placed a few tens of meters from the entrance avenue.
Over time they will undergo a normal cycle of wood decay, useful over the years to a high number of different species: the biological cycle of a fifth of the living beings surveyed in the Park is strictly dependent on the formation and presence of dead wood.
