Rotta dei Boschi and the Houses of Chiroptera

Research activities on Chiroptera

Chiroptera (bats) include a third of the Italian terrestrial mammals and are one of the most endangered wildlife groups because of the environmental changes caused by man. In the ecosystems, they play the essential role of main nocturnal predators of insects.
At the moment, the available knowledge on the bats of La Mandria Park is not very rich: out of the 28 species registered in Piedmont, we know that at least 12 species live in the protected area.

Collecting basic information is therefore essential, given the important role these mammals play in the protected ecosystem.
According to the nocturnal and elusive habits of Chiroptera, it is possible to improve the knowledge placing special boxes-shelters like the ones you can see on the trees. In the Park, 100 "bat boxes" have been placed: they consist of empty cylinders built with concrete, sawdust, and clay, resembling the cavities forming in the old trees where the forest bats usually find shelter. They are of great help for the research activities and can also represent a valid initiative of conservation and sensitization of the public to the issues of the sustainable forest management.
