Castellaccio

Evidence of an ancient past

In the distance, on Rubbianetta hill, it is possible to see the ruins of the ancient medieval castle belonging to the Viscounty of Baratonia.
The first written evidences of the presence of a fortress in this area date back to 1090, even if it was only in 1264 that the provost of the cathedral of Turin sold to Giacomo di Baratonia half of the castle with the relative noble rights for 125 lire of Wien.

The ruins of the castle include some parts of the walls and a four-sided tower in stones and bricks that should have been much higher, as we can guess from the cross vaults. As a matter of fact, the tower probably had further two floors besides the remaining one, so that it was possible to have a complete view of the whole valley.
The entrance to Castellaccio - as it is still called Rubbianetta castle - can be still recognized on the southern slopes of the hill: therefore, to reach the main entrance, it was necessary to follow the whole perimeter of the walls, under fire of the archers.
The materials used are all poor and easy to find in the area: river stones and clay bricks united with mortar, while the big parts that have been lost were in wood, a material too delicate to be preserved until present times.
